MONACO — Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a men's 1000m world record of 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League on Friday, World Athletics reported.
The 22-year-old's time bettered the previous world record of 2:11.96 set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny in 1999, according to World Athletics. Wanyonyi pulled clear over the final 200 metres to claim the mark at the Stade Louis II.

The Meeting Herculis produced further fast times. Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred won the women's 200m in 21.51, while the United States' Masai Russell took the 100m hurdles, according to meet results published by World Athletics.
Wanyonyi, the 2023 world 800m champion, has emerged as a leading figure in middle-distance racing. His record arrives six days before the London Diamond League, where Britain's Josh Kerr is set to attempt the mile world record.
The run underscores a strong 2026 Diamond League season for Kenyan middle-distance athletes and adds a fresh African landmark to a discipline whose record had stood since 1999.
