China said on Friday that the United States will restore Hong Kong's special trade and economic status, a reversal that Beijing portrayed as a meaningful step toward easing trade friction between the world's two largest economies (https://www.reuters.com/business/). China said on Friday that the United States will restore Hong Kong's special trade and economic status, a reversal that Beijing portrayed as a meaningful step toward easing trade friction between the world's two largest economies (https://www.reuters.com/business/). The reported move would unwind restrictions that have clouded the city's commercial standing since 2020.
Hong Kong has long been treated by Washington as a separate customs territory from mainland China, a status that shielded the city from many mainland-facing tariffs and helped anchor its role as a global financial and logistics hub. The United States moved to curtail elements of that preferential treatment after Beijing imposed a national security law on Hong Kong in 2020.
A restoration of the special status would remove a long-running source of bilateral tension and could bolster international confidence in Hong Kong's function as a gateway for capital flows into and out of China. Reuters reported the development on Friday afternoon, citing Chinese authorities.
