ABUJA — Nigeria will hold its 2026 National Diaspora Day on 24–25 July at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with a theme that puts diaspora medical professionals at the centre of efforts to strengthen the country's health system, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
## Theme puts diaspora health professionals at the centre
The official National Diaspora Day 2026 page published by NiDCOM carries the theme **"Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development."** The event is scheduled for Friday 24 to Saturday 25 July 2026 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, NiDCOM said.
According to the NiDCOM page, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is listed as Special Guest of Honour, with Vice President Kashim Shettima named as keynote speaker for the Merit Award session. Other confirmed guests include Secretary to the Government of the Federation Dr George Akume, Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, Dr Michael Adekunle Charles — CEO of the REM Partnership to End Malaria — as speaker and resource person, and Mr Ayodele Olawande as keynote for the Youth Summit.
## Why the diaspora matters to Nigeria's economy
NiDCOM states that Nigeria's diaspora community plays a major role in the economy through **remittances** — which it describes as "billions of dollars sent home annually" — as well as investments and entrepreneurship, knowledge and technology transfer, and international networks that support trade and development.
That framing is backed by hard data: Nigeria received an estimated **US$22.13 billion** in personal remittances in 2024, equivalent to about **8.8% of GDP**, according to the World Bank's indicators database (figures last updated 13 July 2026). The World Bank defines personal remittances as the sum of personal transfers and compensation paid to employees.
## What the event aims to achieve
Per NiDCOM, National Diaspora Day is organised annually to recognise, celebrate and engage Nigerians abroad and their contributions to national development. The stated aims include:
- Recognising the contributions of Nigerians abroad to the economy and development.
- Strengthening engagement between the Nigerian government and the diaspora community.
- Encouraging diaspora investment in sectors such as agriculture, ICT, healthcare and real estate.
- Promoting partnerships between diaspora professionals and local institutions.
- Discussing policies and programmes that support diaspora participation in national development.
The Commission also highlights networking, expert insights, cultural and community engagement, and opportunities for diaspora members to shape national policy as reasons to attend.
