Why Some Songs Get Stuck in Your Head

That tune you can't stop humming has a name and a reason. Here is what makes certain songs so catchy and why your brain replays them.

Almost everyone knows the peculiar experience of a song lodging itself in the mind and playing on repeat, uninvited, sometimes for hours. The phenomenon is common enough to have earned a name, the earworm, and while it can be maddening, it also offers a fascinating window into how music and memory work together in the brain. There are real reasons some tunes cling and others slip away.
Earworms tend to share certain musical features, and researchers who study them have found recurring patterns. The tunes that stick are usually simple and repetitive, easy to remember and easy for the mind to replay. They often have a lively, moderately fast tempo and a melody that rises and falls in a distinctive but singable shape. Crucially, many contain some small surprise or unusual interval, a little twist that makes them stand out just enough to be memorable without being hard to sing. Familiarity plus a hook of novelty is a potent combination.
Repetition in the wider sense matters too. Songs become earworms partly through sheer exposure, which is why the tunes that dominate the airwaves and follow us through shops and adverts are such frequent offenders. The more often a fragment of melody is heard, the more readily the brain can grab and replay it. Earworms are often not the whole song but a short, catchy fragment, usually the chorus or a hook, looping because that is the piece most deeply etched by repetition.
Why the brain replays these fragments unbidden is a subtler question. One idea is that the mind, faced with an incomplete or interrupted piece of music, tends to want to finish it, looping back in an unresolved cycle. Earworms also seem more likely to surface when the mind is idle or wandering, during routine tasks or moments of boredom, as if the unoccupied brain reaches for a familiar pattern to run. Stress and mood can play a part as well, which is why certain songs return at particular times.
Fortunately, the same research hints at ways to dislodge a stubborn earworm. Engaging the mind with an absorbing task can crowd out the looping tune, and some people find that deliberately listening to the whole song, rather than the fragment, gives the brain the sense of completion it seems to crave, allowing the loop to close. Chewing gum, oddly, has been suggested to interfere with the mental replaying, though results vary from person to person.
Far from being a mere annoyance, the earworm reveals how catchy music exploits the way our memory latches onto simple, repeated, slightly surprising patterns. Songwriters, knowingly or not, craft hooks that do exactly this, which is why the most commercially successful music is so often the most infuriatingly memorable. The next time a tune refuses to leave your head, you can at least appreciate that it is a small demonstration of your brain's remarkable, and sometimes inconvenient, gift for pattern and repetition.
