ABUJA, Nigeria — The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and digital health firm Mobihealth International have launched a partnership to expand telehealth Nigeria-wide, targeting rural and hard-to-reach communities, the partners said at an event in Abuja on Friday.
Under the Hybrid Community Telehealth Access Model, citizens will reach care through NOA offices, primary healthcare centres, community pharmacies, schools, workplaces, outreach points or directly by mobile phone, according to a report by Tribune Online. The pathway covers community mobilisation, health education, screening, teleconsultation, diagnosis, referral and follow-up care.
## Doctors shortage driving digital push
Representing NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu, agency Director of Health and Social Care Dr Ayoola Abiodun Olufemi said the partnership would help address what she described as a critical shortage of doctors in rural areas. Mobihealth founder and chief executive Dr Funmi Adewara said access to quality healthcare "should not depend on where someone lives."
NOA will supply grassroots mobilisation and health education; Mobihealth will provide telemedicine infrastructure, electronic prescriptions, remote diagnostics and a clinical network, the companies said.
The rollout will be phased nationwide and supports Nigeria's universal health coverage goals, according to the partners. Across Africa, similar public-private telehealth models are being tested against workforce shortages flagged by the World Health Organization.
