A humanitarian worker returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been evacuated to the UK after a potential healthcare-related exposure to Ebola, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said. The worker had been supporting the Ebola outbreak response in the DRC. UKHSA emphasised that the risk to the general public remains low, noting the transfer was made “out of an abundance of caution.” The incubation period for Ebola ranges from two to 21 days, requiring isolation throughout.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, not airborne transmission. Early symptoms resemble flu or malaria—fever, headache, fatigue—progressing to vomiting, diarrhoea, and potentially organ failure, with some patients experiencing internal and external bleeding.
Richard Pebody, director of epidemic and emerging infections at UKHSA, said: “The risk to the general public remains low. This individual has been transferred out of an abundance of caution, and we're pleased they remain well.” The agency confirmed there are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in the UK.
