Researchers have created contracting muscle implants — called myografts — that can mimic some of the benefits of exercise. The study, published in Nature Aging, involved extracting stem cells from mice quadriceps, culturing them in the lab, and injecting them under the skin on the animals' backs. The transplanted cells formed organized muscle tissue that contracted continuously and developed blood vessels.
In young mice (eight to ten weeks old) with myografts, researchers observed thicker muscle fibres, reduced inflammation and less fat accumulation compared with controls. In older mice (about 1.5 years old), the grafts led to higher lean mass after eight weeks, improved physical function — animals ran farther and had greater grip strength — and higher bone density after 15 weeks.
The treatment also produced metabolic benefits: myografted mice fed a high-fat diet had lower fat mass, lower blood-glucose levels, reduced cholesterol and fewer signs of systemic inflammation. The grafts were additionally linked to improved cognitive performance in maze tests.
The authors note that if translated to humans, the approach could help prevent muscle loss due to ageing, chronic medical conditions and in bed-ridden people. However, senior researchers cautioned that frail patients would likely need multiple grafts throughout the body, and the invasive nature of the procedure may limit its use in those who need it most.
