The 28-year-old Scot took 0.47 seconds off Hicham El Guerrouj's long-standing mark of 3:43.13, set in 1999, World Athletics said. Kerr's time headlined the Diamond League meeting at the London Stadium before a sell-out crowd.
## Kerr ends 26-year wait for mile record
Kerr, the 2023 world 1500m champion, becomes the first Briton to hold the outdoor mile world record since Steve Cram in 1985, meet organisers said. The previous record had stood for more than a quarter of a century.
In the same meet, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson missed out on her own world-record attempt, Sky Sports reported, underlining a night of bold but mixed record bids.
The feat resonates beyond Britain. El Guerrouj's 1999 record was among athletics' most durable marks, and its fall comes amid a season of fast times across global track and field, according to World Athletics.
