LONDON — Arsenal have stepped up their interest in a Julian Alvarez transfer, joining Barcelona in a pursuit of the Atletico Madrid forward, according to Yahoo Sports reporting on 16 July and Sky Sports on 17 July.
## Julian Alvarez transfer: Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico at an impasse
Yahoo Sports said Mikel Arteta's side are "pushing" to beat Barcelona to the Argentina international and hope to conclude a move before the Gunners begin pre-season later this month. Sky Sports reported on 17 July that Alvarez's preference is a switch to Barcelona, but that Arsenal continue to monitor the situation, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Gil Marin involved in discussions.
TEAMtalk reported on 14 July that the 26-year-old favours Barcelona and that Arsenal had made fresh contact. Atletico value the striker highly and the clubs remain far apart on a fee, according to FootballTransfers.
No bid has been accepted and the player has not agreed personal terms. The transfer remains **Unverified**.
The standoff highlights the pull of Premier League spending power against Europe's traditional powers in the summer window. Alvarez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, remains one of the market's most scrutinised targets.
