NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) said Wednesday it is treating the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a critical qualifying battleground for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the Games set to open on July 23.
Speaking at a corporate partnership event at the Team Kenya camp at Kasarani Stadium Hotel, NOC-K President Shadrack Maluki said the Glasgow meet doubles as an Olympic qualifier. "These games are very important because, first of all, they are also Olympic LA 2028 qualifiers," Maluki said, adding that athletes will earn ranking points toward Los Angeles.
Beyond direct qualification pathways, Maluki said Glasgow will serve as a scouting mission, allowing Kenya's technical teams to monitor global powerhouses and shape long-term preparation for LA 2028. He urged corporate partners such as Bidco Africa to back the squad, warning that podium success "can't come like picking them from the trees" and requires sustained development.
Team Kenya is fine-tuning preparations at Kasarani ahead of the Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2 in Scotland.
