MONACO — Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the men's 1,000 metres world record with a time of 2 minutes 11.83 seconds at the Monaco Diamond League on Friday, according to Reuters.
The Olympic 800m champion shaved 0.13 seconds off the previous mark set by compatriot Noah Ngeny 27 years ago, Reuters reported. Wanyonyi finished nearly a full second clear of Britain's Jake Wightman, who placed second, while Algeria's Djamel Sedjati took third.
"It was the first time I ran the 1,000m, and directly breaking the world record makes me so happy," Wanyonyi said, according to Reuters. "I want to thank the other athletes who pushed me to my limit."
World Athletics lists the 1,000m as a rarely contested event that does not feature at the Olympics or World Athletics Championships. The governing body had not, at the time of reporting, confirmed formal ratification of the mark.
The performance adds to a series of records set during the 2026 Diamond League circuit, underlining a strong season for Kenyan middle-distance runners.
**Verified result:** Men's 1,000m — E. Wanyonyi (KEN) 2:11.83 WR; J. Wightman (GBR) 2nd; D. Sedjati (ALG) 3rd.
