MONACO — Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi smashed the men's 1000m world record, clocking 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League on 10 July 2026, according to World Athletics records.
## Wanyonyi 1000m world record eclipses Ngeny's 1999 mark
The time bettered the previous world record of 2:11.96, set by Kenya's Noah Ngeny in 1999, which had stood for more than a quarter-century, World Athletics record books show. Wanyonyi's run came at the Herculis meeting, part of the Wanda Diamond League series.
The feat headlines a strong week for middle-distance racing as the circuit shifts to London this weekend (18–19 July). African distance strength was further underlined by Nigeria's Tobi Amusan, who secured her place in the Diamond League final in Brussels, multiple Nigerian outlets reported. The Diamond League final is scheduled for late August in Brussels, where Amusan will chase a fourth career title, Nigerian media said.
The result adds momentum to a Kenyan middle-distance golden generation and offers a fresh marker for the sport ahead of the London showcase.
