Travelling with only a carry-on is a genuine upgrade to the experience. You skip the check-in queue, walk straight off the plane without waiting at the baggage carousel, and never face a lost suitcase. Doing it for a longer trip is a matter of method, not sacrifice, and the method is easier than most people expect.
Start with a capsule of clothing built around a single colour scheme so everything mixes and matches. A handful of versatile items that layer together will carry you through far more days than a large pile of single-use outfits, because you re-wear and recombine rather than pack one look per day. Choose fabrics that resist creasing and dry quickly, since being able to rinse a shirt overnight turns three of them into a week's worth.
How you pack matters as much as what. Rolling soft garments tightly saves space and reduces creasing, while packing cubes compress everything and keep the bag organised so you are not unpacking the whole case to find socks. Fill shoes with small items to use every gap, and wear your bulkiest layer and heaviest shoes on the plane rather than packing them.
Liquids are the usual sticking point, because cabin rules limit you to small containers in a single clear bag. Decant toiletries into travel bottles, favour solid alternatives like bar soap and solid shampoo where you can, and remember that most destinations sell toothpaste and sunscreen, so you need only enough to arrive with.
The final discipline is honesty about what you will actually use. Lay everything out, then remove the just-in-case items you are packing out of anxiety rather than need. Anything genuinely essential and forgotten can almost always be bought where you are going. Travel once with a light bag and the freedom of it tends to convert you for good.
