Mali's army said it launched a counterattack after fighters linked to al-Qaeda and a separatist group ambushed soldiers in the country's volatile north on Saturday, according to Al Jazeera. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/18/armed-groups-attack-malian-military-convoy-in-gao-region
The Malian military said in a statement that armed groups ambushed a convoy in a remote part of the Gao region, with a military source in Gao telling the AFP news agency the convoy travelling from Anefis to Gao was attacked near Tabankort and that "the fighting is ongoing." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/18/armed-groups-attack-malian-military-convoy-in-gao-region
Both the regional al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed responsibility in separate statements speaking of "great human losses" and "serious material damage" on the Malian side, according to Al Jazeera. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/18/armed-groups-attack-malian-military-convoy-in-gao-region
The army said its "partners" were also attacked, likely referring to Russian paramilitaries or mercenaries, and AFP reported that images released by the FLA purportedly showed dozens of army prisoners seized during the ambush, according to Al Jazeera. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/18/armed-groups-attack-malian-military-convoy-in-gao-region
The attack comes amid a security crisis gripping Mali for more than 14 years; the fighting has triggered a humanitarian crisis with more than five million people — almost 20 percent of the population — in need of assistance, Al Jazeera reported. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/18/armed-groups-attack-malian-military-convoy-in-gao-region
