Sixty national teams from four continents are competing in the final qualifying window for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, with five African squads vying for limited berths, according to tournament organizers.
The FIBA Africa qualifiers feature twelve teams split into two groups, with Senegal, Ivory Coast and Mali leading Group F at 5-1, while Cameroon, Guinea, Tunisia and Nigeria share identical 4-2 records in Group E. Only five African teams will advance to join the 32-team field in Qatar next August.
Cameroon faces Nigeria in a pivotal Group E showdown on August 27 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, while Ivory Coast meets Mali later that day at 11:30 a.m. ET. The August 28 slate includes Nigeria versus South Sudan at 8 a.m. ET and Guinea versus Cape Verde at 11 a.m. ET.
The qualifying tournament follows a home-and-away format across six windows, with teams earning points for victories. Group winners and top runners-up advance based on cumulative records, with tiebreakers determined by head-to-head results and point differentials.
FIBA's African qualification pathway has expanded access for developing basketball nations, with South Sudan making its competitive debut after gaining FIFA membership in 2023. The continent's representation has grown from three to five World Cup slots since 2019, reflecting basketball's rapid expansion across Africa.
