JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — NBA Africa has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the nonprofit Learn Fresh to expand NBA Math Hoops, a basketball-themed maths education program, starting with 1,000 students in Johannesburg, according to an AWS announcement on August 19, 2026.
AWS said it will supply artificial-intelligence tools, cloud infrastructure and technical expertise through its $100 million Education Equity Initiative. Amazon Bedrock will personalise maths challenges, while Amazon Translate will localise content into English, Arabic, French and Swahili, the company said.
## Expansion targets thousands more students
The rollout runs from August 20 to September 26 via NBA Africa's network of schools and community organisations, AWS said. It builds on a three-year pilot between Learn Fresh and NBA Africa that has trained educators in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, with plans to grow into several other African countries next year, according to the announcement. Technology publications including htxt.africa reported a target of reaching 10,000 children by 2027.
"Through NBA Math Hoops, young people develop critical math and problem-solving skills by engaging with the game they love," NBA Africa chief executive Clare Akamanzi said in the release. A WestEd randomised trial cited by AWS found students gained four to five months of maths learning after 17-24 hours in the program.
The initiative underscores basketball's growing off-court footprint in Africa, where the league continues to invest alongside the Basketball Africa League.
