The United States attacked Iran for a sixth consecutive night, with strikes hitting infrastructure in the country's south including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, Iranshahr and Bandar-e Khamir, according to Iranian media (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war). US Central Command said the latest assaults began at 18:00 GMT on Thursday and described the operation as an effort "to further degrade Iranian military capabilities" (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war). Iranian media reported seven deaths amid explosions and attacks in those locations, with casualties feared in the Bandar Abbas and Bandar-e Khamir areas where transport infrastructure — including the Kehvarstan Bridge and a railway station — was struck (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war). The death toll is a claim by Iranian outlets and has not been independently confirmed by the monitor. Iran signalled it is prepared to widen the confrontation. Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia warned Iran's attacks "will spread to new areas" if US strikes continued, while another military spokesman accused Washington of destabilising the Strait of Hormuz, saying conditions there "will never return to how it was before the 40-day war" (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war). The IRGC claimed attacks on a US-used airbase in Bahrain and further strikes on Kuwait and Jordan, citing what it called a "barbaric" US attack near a children's cancer hospital in Ahvaz (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/iran-condemns-barbaric-us-attack-near-childrens-cancer-hospital). Kuwait said it was responding to continued Iranian missile and drone attacks after reporting that 32 drones targeted vital facilities, causing material damage (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war). The escalation further imperils a US-Iran interim deal signed last month, with both sides accusing the other of violating the memorandum of understanding amid a week of spiralling hostilities (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyqwkegqk0o). White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that Trump would hold Iran "accountable" but "is always open to diplomacy" (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/16/us-mounts-sixth-straight-night-of-attacks-as-iran-warns-of-wider-war).
