The United States carried out a sixth consecutive night of strikes on southern Iranian infrastructure, with CENTCOM saying it completed its latest major wave at 01:40 GMT Friday. Iranian media and officials reported damage to power lines around Bandar Abbas, at least six bridges and a railway station, and a maritime control tower, while Al Jazeera reported at least seven to eight people killed (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2026/7/16/iran-war-live-us-carries-out-strikes-on-civilian-infrastructure-in-south, https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2026/7/17/us-strikes-destroy-key-bridges-tower-in-southern-iran).
Iran says 38 people have been killed and more than 400 injured in US attacks since the two sides met in Switzerland on June 22 for a 60-day negotiation period — a far higher toll than earlier figures. The casualty count is reported via AFP/Al Jazeera as Iran's claim and has not been independently confirmed (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/17/us-attacks-southern-iran-as-tehran-hits-gulf-countries-whats-the-latest).
Iran's retaliation has spread across the region. Al Jazeera reported that strikes in Iraq killed eight Iranian Kurdish fighters, which the outlet described as an expansion of US attacks, and that the IRGC said it targeted US jets in Jordan (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2026/7/16/iran-war-live-us-carries-out-strikes-on-civilian-infrastructure-in-south). Falling debris from intercepted Iranian strikes also sparked fires in Kuwait, according to Al Jazeera (https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2026/7/17/falling-debris-from-intercepted-iranian-strikes-sparks-fires-in-kuwait).
Several Gulf states reported coming under Iranian fire. Qatar's Interior Ministry said explosions were heard in Doha, the security threat level was raised twice and one child was injured by falling shrapnel (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/17/gulf-states-come-under-iranian-fire-as-us-strikes-intensify). The IRGC, via Tasnim and Al Jazeera, also claimed it destroyed a US air-control radar in Oman's Ghanim region and a maritime surveillance radar in the Strait of Hormuz, and attacked a US special-operations command centre at the al-Tanf base in Syria; these are reported as IRGC claims, not independently confirmed (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/17/us-attacks-southern-iran-as-tehran-hits-gulf-countries-whats-the-latest).
On the diplomatic track, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan's Ishaq Dar called on Friday for an immediate ceasefire and a resumption of dialogue, seeking to salvage the tentative June deal between Washington and Tehran (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/17/gulf-states-come-under-iranian-fire-as-us-strikes-intensify).
The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, warned that the Strait of Hormuz crisis threatens global energy security, saying 'oil security is still a critical issue' (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/17/iea-chief-warns-strait-of-hormuz-crisis-threatens-global-energy-security).
As part of the US naval blockade, Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit released video showing them boarding the commercial tanker M/T Wen Yao in the Gulf of Oman (https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2026/7/17/us-marines-board-commercial-tanker-in-gulf-of-oman).
