ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has unveiled a genomics hub and says it aims to raise up to $500 million a year in research funding, Business Day reported on Thursday. The facility, also described as a "Genomic City," is intended to strengthen scientific research and healthcare, The Fact reported the same day.
Business Day said the government expects the hub to anchor a sustained push for research financing. The Fact said the project is designed to boost scientific research, healthcare "and others." Neither outlet immediately detailed the hub's location or a breakdown of funding sources.
The announcement comes as Nigeria moves to expand its research and laboratory workforce. The Senate this week passed a bill to establish a Medical Laboratory Science University, The Guardian Nigeria reported on Thursday.
For Africa's most populous nation, the hub is framed by the government as a step toward greater healthcare self-reliance and stronger domestic research capacity, Business Day and The Fact reported.
## Why the Nigeria Genomics Hub Matters
The launch signals Abuja's prioritisation of local scientific infrastructure at a moment when African governments are weighing how to retain research talent and reduce dependence on foreign laboratories. Expanding genomics capacity is presented by the government as a route to faster diagnostics and homegrown biomedical work.
