NUNEATON, England — Shell has unveiled a one-off concept electric car that can charge its battery from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes, according to BBC News (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c862980v374o), reported 10 July 2026.
The Shell Triple 10 Challenge Concept Car was built from scratch in 18 months to pack in as much cutting-edge EV technology as possible, BBC News said. A key innovation is submerging parts of the motor and all of the battery in Shell's new battery coolant fluid, which keeps the electrical components cool so the battery can be worked hard and charged quickly while staying within safe limits, according to Denis Gorman of RML Group, which helped build the vehicle.
The team used recycled materials to lower the car's carbon footprint and reduced its weight, achieving a range of about 124 miles (200km) — typical for its class — from a battery half the usual size, BBC News reported. Ben Gale of the HORIBA-MIRA testing facility in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, where the car was developed, said there was "learning around all of that" as the concept was refined.
Toby Rockstroh of Shell told BBC News there was "a lot of interest from car makers" and the company was hopeful that "the next generation" of EVs would bring a vehicle like it to market. The car is a demonstrator rather than a production model, and some prototype parts, such as 3D-printed plastic wing mirrors, remain unready for showroom conditions.
Faster charging and smaller batteries could ease range anxiety and reduce demand for raw materials, issues central to the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles, analysts say.
